What makes basic dyes popular for coloring? Lets’ explore!

Also known as cationic dyes, basic colorants are listed under synthetic dyes, which are used as a base for dyes. The color base of such dyes is water insoluble and can be made soluble by transforming the base into a certain type of salt.

These coloring agents are used to color silk, acrylic, wool, and mod-acrylic fibers because they produce bright shades with high tincture value. Some examples of basic colorants are crystal violet, Basic Rhoda mine B, Victoria Blue B, basic fuchsin and methylene blue.

Here are some properties that reveal why basic dyes are a great option, for different applications:

  1. The exceptional characteristics of these coloring agents are the brilliance and strength of their shades.

  2. The color shades that basic colorants produce are not available with other types of dyes.

  3. Many of the basic coloring agents are sparingly resolvable in water.

  4. Basic colorants can quickly dissolve in water, when glacial acetic acid is added to it.

  5. Basic colorants are readily solvable in alcohol.

  6. The light fastness of basic coloring agents is poor to moderate.

  7. The wet fastness of these colorants is good.

  8. The wet fastness of these coloring agents can be enhanced by back tanning.

  9. When these dyes are treated with reducing agents, they get transformed into colorless compounds and retain their original colors when exposed to air.

  10. Another property of basic coloring agents is that they can be easily detached from the material by boiling it with color cutting acids such as dilute acetic acid or hydrochloric acid.

  11. Apart from their use as color fibers, basic colorants make inks, ink ribbons , and are used for dyeing leather

  12. These coloring agents are also used to color wooden goods, and produce attractive natural and bright shades.

  13. Basic colorants exhibit attraction towards fibers like wool, silk, cationic dye, able acrylic and they have no attraction for fibers like cotton.

The Advantages of basic colorants are:

  • Moderate substantively

  • Relatively economical

  • Wide range of shades

  • Shows good color brightness

The modified basic coloring agents exhibit a relatively longer molecular structure, and possess key advantages over their conventional counterparts:

  • Better Light fastness

  • Can be used to color all fibers

  • Clear backwaters

  • Outstanding substantively

Application of basic colorants:

  • Coloring of dried flowers

  • To color acrylic fibre

  • To color leather.

  • coloring of jute

  • coloring of papers
